Here is your guide: 5 mistakes to avoid to build a harmonious and authentic relationship with your horse

Trying to follow methods that don't suit us
Cause : Traditional methods don't leave room for feelings and listening. As a result, many riders feel compelled to follow a method "to the letter" without adapting it to themselves or their horse.
Consequence : Fighting against your intuition and your own ideas does not allow you to flourish in your practice. This often leads to frustration and a feeling of failure.
Example : We tried to follow the methods in use, but they did not adapt to our size, nor to our instinctive way of functioning, nor to the particular horses we were responsible for. And with other programs we were still not comfortable with certain tools.
Correction : Choose a program that suits you. Then personalize it so you can make it your own. It should be able to adapt to your strengths and needs so that you and your horse can find a natural balance. If, for example, you don't like the stick with a plastic bag, it's better not to use it.

Not respecting your own values
Cause : Social pressure is enormous in the equestrian world. Faced with these prejudices and dictates, many of us end up acting against what they believe is right.
Consequence : For us and the horse, this will create an emotional misalignment that affects the relationship and mutual trust. This is the cause of many blockages.
Example : By wanting to do well in the eyes of others when it was not consistent for us and seemed unfair to the horses, it became very uncomfortable, making our communication tense and confused. But it was the exasperation that allowed us to give up to listen to ourselves and listen to the horse.
Correction : Align yourself with your values : Respect your convictions and those of your horse for smoother communication and a relationship based on mutual trust.

Going too fast
Cause : Often out of impatience or pushed by external pressure, we may tend to push our horse, or ourselves, too hard or too fast.
Consequence : A certain misunderstanding sets in, a certain unease. Stress increases unnecessarily, and instead of consolidating achievements, we often observe a step backwards.
Example : On our side, we suffered a lot from external pressure that probably didn't even exist. Our brain offered us on a platter a good excuse to have to go as fast as possible. As a result, impatience competed with annoyance and doubt. In the end, we lost time and especially a lot of well-being for everyone.
Correction : Take your time: Respect your own rhythm and that of your horse. Allow yourself to progress slowly, celebrating small victories. The advantage is that by acting in this way you promote your personal growth by thinking you are only working for the well-being and the results of your horse!

Forgetting oneself
Cause : The equestrian world too often forgets that the horse-rider relationship is a two-way dynamic. And if we talk about the horse's problems, we forget the human being.
Consequence : If we respect the rhythm and needs of the horse, but neglect our own needs, emotions or limits, we can unbalance this relationship and endanger our connection.
Example : For the horses, we wanted it to work. But it was difficult, so we redoubled our efforts. Except that we no longer listened to ourselves, neither personally nor between us. So we were always tired, and we got angry quickly, against ourselves. And since the horses could not understand our mood swings, their progress was erratic and even called into question the achievements.
Correction : Stay in listening: Be attentive to yourself as much as to your horse. Accept the "no" days and adapt them accordingly. For example, if one day you feel the annoyance rising, try to clear your head, take a good breath, then start again or move on to something else. You can go back to a step of the exercise that the horse does well to finish on a positive note for you as for him.

Putting pressure on yourself
Cause : We would always like to get excellent results. But setting goals that are too rigid or unrealistic expectations, for oneself or one's horse can be highly counterproductive.
Consequence : For us as for the horse, the successes will not be clearly identified, celebrated and consolidated. Learning will not be a source of pride and pleasure but of stress.
Example : We did not feel legitimate, so to prove our competence we ran after quick results, but especially spectacular progress. We exhausted ourselves, we finished the sessions often disappointed and disappointing our horses, with an incoherent and stressful message.
Correction : Adapt each step to your possibilities and the rhythms of your horse, because every step forward counts. And remember that every moment, however simple, is an opportunity to learn and grow. Every time you spend time with your horse you work on the bond, the understanding, the communication and the reinforcement of the achievements.
